Family emergency

We understand how important family is and that is why we have designed our travel insurance to provide cover around family emergencies.

What's Covered?
  • Reasonable expenses for your return to New Zealand. If your travel companion or relative of either of you who is aged 84 or under and resides in New Zealand or Australia dies, or is disabled by an injury or sickness, we'll reimburse the reasonable costs of your return to New Zealand.*
  • Death of a relative not caused by a pre-existing medical condition. If you need to change or cancel your plans because a relative dies, and the death was not caused by a known or a medical condition that existed before the policy was bought.

what's not covered?
  • Family Emergency related to pre-existing medical conditions. We will not reimburse the travel costs associated with your family emergency if you had prior knowledge of the illness and it was pre-existing before the policy was issued.
  • Family Emergency for persons aged 85 or over. We will not reimburse travel costs if the claim arises from or is anyway related to the death or hospitalisation of any person aged 85 or over. 
  • Hospitalisation related to a pre-existing medical condition.If a relative becomes seriously ill and requires hospitalisation from a pre-existing medical condition. 
  • Unplanned travel arrangements. We will only pay the cost of the fare class that you had planned to travel at and you must take advantage of any pre-arranged return travel to New Zealand.
  • Change of plans. If your relative changes their travel plans and you want to go with them, we don't cover this.
  • Additional expenses. If you claim any additional travel and accommodation expenses due to a family emergency, then we don't cover you.
  • Your relative resides outside New Zealand or Australia. If your family member resides outside New Zealand/Australia, we won't cover you for any expenses related to them.

Family Emergency FAQs

What Happens If I Get Sick or Injured Overseas?
  • 1Cover offer Emergency Medical Assistance anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. In an emergency situation, you can call our medical assistance team who will help with medical problems which may arise. If you are injured or become unwell overseas, you must notify 1Cover as soon as possible. 

  • What if my family member is hospitalised due to a medical condition that has been stable for many years?
  • If a relative is hospitalised or dies in New Zealand or Australia after the policy was issued as a result of a pre-existing medical condition(s) and you didn’t know that there could be a likelihood of death or hospitalisation, then we will cover up to $2000 per adult on the policy.

  • What if my relative lives overseas, will i be covered to change my plans to get to them?
  • The family emergency benefit is only applicable to relatives who reside in New Zealand or Australia. Please check the Policy Wording for full details.
