Long Term Travel Insurance Features and Benefits

Going on a gap year? Or just a serious case of wanderlust? No matter the reason, if you’re going away on a long trip, we’ve got a policy to suit your needs.

Our single trip policies can cover you for up to 12 months abroad, with the option to extend for a further 12 months if you want to stay longer, just make sure you extend your policy before it expires.

What Is Covered

1Cover's comprehensive policies provide cover for the following.

The most important aspect of your cover, after all, you can’t put a price on your health.

This will be a key consideration for any long-term trips you may have planned.

This includes not only luggage and personal effects but delay expenses and theft of cash.

This includes rental vehicle excess, personal liability and more.

Long Term Travel Insurance Options

Don’t pay extra for coverage you won’t need. If you’re going on a long trip be sure to choose from one of the following options.

Our basics policy provides unlimited coverage for medical assistance, emergency and hospital expenses.

Comprehensive policies provide our highest level of cover. You will have provision to claim for cancellation, luggage medical and more.

Our Ski and Snowboarding policies include all the cover of our comprehensive plans plus cover for prepaid ski passes, ski hire and ski lessons.

Long Term Travel Insurance FAQs

  • Can I extend my policy?
  • To extend your policy you must do so before the expiration date listed on your certificate of insurance. You may extend your policy for 12 months after the initial expiration date. This can be done by contacting us or logging into the members area.

  •  What Do I Do If I Lose My Policy Documentation?
  • You can always retrieve your policy documentation from the Members Area. Your policy will be listed under the ‘My Policy’ section.

  • Will You Fly Me Home If I Fall Sick Overseas?
  • If you have purchased Comprehensive, Essentials, Basics, Frequent Traveller, Visitors or Already Overseas, cover is available for your medical transfer or evacuation if you must be transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment overseas, or be brought back to New Zealand with appropriate medical supervision.
Cover is also available under these Plans for the return to New Zealand of your Dependants if they are left without supervision following your hospitalisation or evacuation.
All expenses for medical evacuation must first be approved by 1Cover. This only applies to the Plans listed above, as there is no cover for medical/hospital expenses or repatriation under Domestic plans.

  • Is My Policy Extended If My Return Journey Is Delayed Due To A Claimable Event?
  • You may extend your cover free of charge if you find that your return to Australia has been delayed because of one or more of the following:
    a) a busline, airline, shipping line or rail authority you are travelling on, or that has accepted your fare or luggage and personal effects, is delayed
    b) The delay is due to a reason for which you can claim under your policy (subject to 1cover approval). Please refer to the PDS for further information.
