"Will definitely use 1Cover again"

First time having to make a claim on a travel insurance policy, and the team was really helpful during quite a stressful situation. They started a claim for us before we took my son the hospital, and approved our claim within a few days. It was quite a relief to have the claim paid so it was one less thing to worry about! The team also checked in with us a few times to see how our son was doing, I will definitely use 1 Cover when we travel again!

"Customer for life"

This is the first time I have had to submit a claim for travel insurance, I had to cancel a large portion of my trip due a death in the family. They made this so easy to deal with while having so many other things going on. Customer for life for sure.

"Always Use 1Cover - Outstanding Service"

Hubby had an unexpected heart attack whilst in Los Angeles recently and was in hospital for a week. On top of that we couldn’t go home for another week until he got clearance to travel. The extra accommodation, food, car hire, Uber, flight expenses and medical costs were tens of thousands. 1Cover covered it all. Also, the telephone and email support I got whilst there and since we got home was amazing. Thanks 1Cover, highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I miss my flight or if flights are delayed/cancelled?

In the first instance, you should contact the airline to see if any alternate arrangement can be made or if any compensation may be offered.  You should retain any documentation provided by the airline or receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses which you may incur as a result of the delay or cancellation so that you can submit them should you need to make a claim. We do not cover for cancellation, delays or rescheduling which are at the fault of the airline as the responsibility falls on the transport provider to supply you with the services you have paid them for. Please see more information about travel insurance and cancellation cover.

What happens if I get sick or injured overseas?

If you’re travelling internationally, 1Cover offers Emergency Medical Assistance anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. If you’re sick or injured, we advise that you or a member of your travelling party call our medical assistance team as soon as possible.

For minor ailments, such as those that only require a GP visit, you may choose to visit a doctor, pay for your visit upfront, and then submit your claim either from overseas or once you return home. Make sure that you keep all receipts and reports from your treating doctor, including the diagnosis and treatment notes and any other documents.

What if I ride a scooter or motorcycle overseas?

There are certain things you will need to be aware of in terms of your travel insurance if you’re riding a scooter, moped or motorcycle overseas. Find out everything you need to know here.

Can I extend my policy online?

Yes, if your policy hasn’t yet expired, you can extend your policy via the Policy Manager. If you log in and aren’t able to extend for some reason, you can get in contact with our friendly call centre.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

If you need to cancel your trip, notify any travel providers (airlines, accommodation, tour providers, etc) of your intention to cancel.

Make sure you check whether your travel providers will refund you. Sometimes, they will return deposits, fares, etc., depending on when you cancel and what your original contract states.

If you aren’t reimbursed, then check the certificate of insurance and the Policy Wording to see whether your circumstances are covered.

Once you have done this, and you intend to claim, you’ll need to obtain and supply confirmations, refund advices, and terms and conditions. We request these for lodgement of your claim.

What do I do in the case of a theft?

A theft while you’re away is incredibly unsettling, but to substantiate your claim, you’ll need to report the theft to the police or nearest local authority within 24 hours of the incident and obtain a written report that can to be used as supporting documents.

Make sure that the police report you obtain is an official one, and that all the items that have been stolen are clearly detailed. You’ll also need to capture the circumstances surrounding the event. Remember, the more information on the report, the better.

When you submit your claim, you’ll also need to provide proof of purchase and/or ownership in relation to the stolen items.

Travel Insurance Explained

Even the best-planned holidays can take an unexpected turn.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance provides financial protection against unexpected events that can happen before or during your trip, whether you’re travelling overseas or within New Zealand.

Depending on your policy, travel insurance can help cover unexpected costs associated with trip cancellation, travel delays, overseas medical emergencies, lost or stolen luggage, accidental injuries and other unforeseen events.

Having the right travel insurance can give you greater peace of mind, so you can focus on enjoying your holiday rather than worrying about what could go wrong.

At 1Cover, we’re here to help when things don’t go according to plan. From travel delays and lost luggage to unexpected medical expenses, our travel insurance is designed to help protect you when things go sideways. Explore what we cover.

Why do you need travel insurance?

You’ve booked your flights, packed your bags and planned your itinerary, but have you bought travel insurance?

If you’re travelling overseas from New Zealand, travel insurance can provide valuable financial protection against unexpected costs and disruptions. Overseas medical expenses are one of the main reasons New Zealanders take out travel insurance - and for good reason. Medical treatment can be extremely expensive in some countries. Believe us when we say that medical bills in the United States can be eye-watering.

Even when travelling to Australia, where New Zealanders may have access to reciprocal healthcare arrangements, there are still important gaps in cover. These arrangements generally won’t cover costs such as flight upgrades, medical escorts or repatriation if you need to return to New Zealand for medical treatment.

Notably, travel insurance has become mandatory for visas or entry to some countries.

Travel insurance can also help cover you for a range of unexpected events, depending on your policy, including trip cancellations, travel delays, lost or stolen luggage, natural disasters and other travel disruptions.

Don’t just take our word for it. Explore our travel insurance case studies to see real examples of how unexpected events can affect travellers and why having the right cover matters.

How much does travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance costs vary depending on your circumstances and the policy you choose. The cost of travel insurance is influenced by factors such as:

Trip cost: More expensive trips can result in higher premiums.

Destination: Some destinations may cost more to insure due to medical expenses, travel risks or other factors.

Trip length: Longer trips generally cost more to cover.

Age and health: Your age and relevant medical conditions can affect the cost of your policy.

Level of cover: Comprehensive policies and optional extras, such as cancellation cover, adventure activities or rental car excess cover, may increase the premium.

When comparing travel insurance, consider both the price and the level of cover provided. The cheapest policy may not offer enough protection for your trip, so check the policy limits, exclusions and benefits before purchasing.

Which is the best travel insurance?

The best travel insurance depends on your individual needs and preferences, such as the destination, the value of pre-paid expenses, activities and experiences you plan to take part in and your personal circumstances. Rather than choosing a policy based on price alone, look for travel insurance that provides an appropriate level of cover for your specific trip.

Consider whether the policy provides adequate cover for overseas emergency medical expenses, including medical evacuation and repatriation, your luggage and personal belongings, your transport and accommodation costs and cover for any pre-existing medical conditions.

It’s also important to understand the policy limits, conditions and exclusions. These explain when you may or may not be covered and can help you avoid unexpected surprises if you need to make a claim.

At 1Cover, we offer flexible travel insurance options so you can choose cover that suits your trip and circumstances. You can also explore our travel insurance awards and customer reviews to learn more about our products and claims experience.

Ready to find the right cover? Compare our travel insurance plans and choose the policy that best suits your needs.

What travel insurance doesn’t cover?

It’s important to note that travel insurance policies cannot possibly cover every unexpected event. Here are a few examples of things not covered by travel insurance.

Change of mind: Cancelling a trip simply because you changed your mind or feel reluctant to travel is not covered.

Unattended belongings: Lost, stolen, or damaged items left unsupervised where they could be easily taken is not covered.

Scheduled transport: Transport disruptions are common when travelling. Cancellations, delays, diversions or reschedules due to mechanical, technical or operational reasons are not covered.

Elective or routine care: Planned procedures, cosmetic surgery, and routine dental care are not covered.

These are limited examples, so important to read and understand policy exclusions outlined in the Policy Wording.

Things don't always go to plan when you travel.
