Travel Delay Expenses and Travel Insurance

Travel Delay Expenses refers to an event which impacts or has reasonable cause to impact your travel plans. The cost of extra accommodation, meals, transport and missed events can add up quickly. If your disruption means you need to cancel the remainder of your trip and head home, this can become even more expensive. We understand that travel is unpredictable and that's why we have cover you can count on.

There are many events covered under Travel Delay Expenses, see below for more details.

What's Covered?
  • Transport Disruption: If your pre-paid transport is cancelled, delayed, or rescheduled for a reason outside of your control and you are delayed for at least 6 hours, we will reimburse up to $200 for reasonable additional meal and accommodation expenses; and up to $200 for each full 24-hour period that the disruption continues beyond the initial 6-hour delay.

Terms and conditions, limits and exclusions apply. Please see Policy Wording for full details.

what's not covered?
  • You missed a connecting flight or transport service where the stopover, layover, or connection originally scheduled on your itinerary was less than 4 hours.

  • You can claim your additional meals and accommodation expenses from anyone else including receiving compensation from another service provider.

  • Your claim arises from the financial collapse of any accommodation, tour, or transport provider, booking agent, or travel agency.

  • Your claim arises directly or indirectly from an act or threat of terrorism or civil protest or unrest where the military or armed forces have seized control.

  • New flights or other transport costs or upgrades for you to continue your journey.

  • Before your period of cover commenced, you were aware of any reason that may cause your journey to be cancelled, delayed, diverted, or shortened.

  • The out of pocket expenses you have paid for, are or on behalf of any other person, unless that person is also an insured person named on your certificate of insurance.

Terms and conditions, limits and exclusions apply. Please see Policy Wording for full details.

would i be covered by disruption of journey?

It can be tricky to understand when Travel Delay Expenses will and will not cover you, so we've prepared the below example scenarios of when travellers would and would not be covered.

You're Covered
  • Flight Cancellation: Jane books a flight to Bali, but when she arrives at the airport the airline delays the flight by 12 hours due to severe weather. With Travel Delay Expenses cover, Jane can claim her additional meal and accommodation expenses which she wouldn't have been expected to pay, had the reason for the claim not occurred.

  • Natural Disaster: While John is on vacation in Fiji, a sudden natural disaster (like an earthquake or hurricane) strikes the area, forcing him to evacuate and cancel his accommodation. John can claim expenses related to the additional emergency accommodation.

  • Missed Connection: The Watson family experience a delay on their first flight, causing them to miss a connecting flight, that was scheduled for 6 hours after their initial flight was due to land. Their travel insurance provides compensation for additional accommodation and meals which they wouldn't have been expected to pay, had the reason for the claim not occurred while they wait for the next available flight.

Terms and conditions, limits and exclusions apply. Please see Policy Wording for full details.

You're not covered
  • After his initial flight was delayed by 6 hours, Ben misses his connection, which was originally scheduled to be a 3 hour long layover. As the planned layover was less than 4 hours he is not covered.

  • Sarah's flight was cancelled because the airline she was flying with went bankrupt. She is not covered as we do not cover financial collapse or insolvency of travel providers.

  • Hannah's flight was delayed by 10 hours, whilst she waited for her new flight, she paid for her friend Ashley’s meals who doesn't have insurance. The cost of the meals for Ashley are not covered under Hannah’s insurance as Ashley is not named on Hannah’s certificate of insurance.

disruption of journey FAQs

  • Can I claim for the hotel cost if my outbound flight is delayed?
  • If your flight is delayed for more than 6 hours and you are unable to return home for the delayed period, the Travel Delay Expenses benefits provides cover for reasonable costs for meals & accommodation up to $200 for the initial 6-hour period with an additional $200 for each additional 24-hour period that the disruption continues.

Please note that you will need to claim through an airline first and show us documentation that they are not able to reimburse you for any associated costs due to a flight cancellation. Please see the Policy Wording for full details on Travel Delay Expenses benefit.

  • Can I claim if I miss my connecting flight?
  • It depends on the reason that you miss your connecting flight. We may cover you if you miss your connecting flight due unforeseen circumstances such a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest or unrest, weather, natural disaster, or physical accident affecting your mode of transport or if you become sick or injured and are unfit to travel. We do not cover you for a missed connecting flight that were the fault of the airline as it is their responsibility to provide you with the service you have paid for. If you miss a connecting flight, we recommend seeking compensation from your transport provider.

  • If my flight is cancelled, can I book with another airline and claim?
  • It depends on the reason your flight was cancelled. If you decide to book with another airline because your original flight was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances strike, riot, hijack, civil protest or unrest, weather, natural disaster, or physical accident affecting your mode of transport then you may be entitled to claim. We always advise you to contact your original airline for alternative flight options and utilise existing bookings where possible. We also advise you to contact us first before paying out any additional travel expenses.
