New Zealand Government advice for Belgium

Flag of Belgium

When travelling to Belgium, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Belgium.

There is some risk to your security in Belgium due to the ongoing threat from terrorism and we advise caution.

Terrorism
Terrorist groups continue to make threats to conduct attacks in Belgium and across Europe. Terrorist attacks have occurred in a number of European cities, including Paris, London, Madrid and Moscow. Targets have included public transport and transport hubs. Brussels hosts a number of international institutions, including the European Union and NATO, which are sensitive locations.

Terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq continue to plan attacks against the West and domestic threats also remain.  Some plots are likely to involve foreign fighters returning to Belgium and Europe from conflicts in these countries.  Belgian authorities continue to arrest individuals for terrorism-related offences.

New Zealanders in Belgium, as in the rest of Europe, are advised to be security- conscious at all times, particularly in public places, and stay informed of potential risks to safety and security by monitoring the media .   We recommend following any instructions issued by the local authorities.

Civil unrest
Demonstrations and protests occur from time to time in Belgium.  New Zealanders are advised to avoid all protests as they can occasionally turn violent.

General travel advice
New Zealanders travelling or living in Belgium should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place.

New Zealanders in Belgium are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
