Additional Accommodation & Travel Expenses

Things like injury or illness can disrupt your travel plans. But don't worry, we've got you covered. Cover is also provided for various other disruptions to your journey. 

What's Covered?
  • Unable to travel due to injury/illness. Under your comprehensive policy, cover is provided for reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses if you can't travel because of an injury/illness.
  • Return to New Zealand. We'll also reimburse you the reasonable costs of your return to Zealand if your journey is cut short due to injury/illnesses.
  • Cancelled/delayed schedule transport. We'll reimburse you for the costs if your scheduled transport is cancelled or delayed etc because of strike, riot, hijack,civil protest, weather or natural disaster (provided you did not know about the natural disaster or event before you booked your travel). 
  • Disruption of journey. Cover is provided if the disruption arises from the loss of your travel documents, you're in an accident or your home is left uninhabitable by fire, explosion, earthquake or flood.

what's not covered?
  • If you haven't received certified advice that you are unable to travel. All injuries and illnesses need to be certified by a medical adviser and state that you're unfit to travel.
  • Unplanned travel arrangements. We will only pay the cost of the fare class that you had planned to travel at and you must take advantage of any pre-arranged return travel to New Zealand.
  • Knowledge of cause. If, before your period of cover began, you were aware of any reason that may cause your journey to be cancelled, disrupted or delayed (including knowledge of disasters or natural events). 
  • Third-party claiming. If you can claim your additional travel and accommodation expenses from someone else, then we don't cover you.
  • Specific Events. We won't pay for cancellations, delays, rescheduling or diversions to your scheduled or connecting transport unless it is due to a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, weather, natural disaster or accident affecting your mode of transport.
  • Change of Plans. If your travelling buddy changes their travel plans and you want to go with them, we don't cover this.
  • Financial Collapse. We won't pay if your claim relates to the financial collapse of any transport provider, travel agent, booking agent, tour operator or accommodation provider.
  • Breach of Rental Agreement. If you operate a rental vehicle in breach of the rental agreement, we won't be able to cover your for car rental excess.

Additional Accommodation & Travel Expenses FAQs

  • What do you mean by “reasonable cost?”
  • As an example, if your return home is delayed due to a claimable event and you would needed to extend your stay, it would be reasonable for you to stay at the same accommodation you were in or one of a similar class/cost.

  • What Happens if I Miss My Flight Or If The Flight Is Delayed?
  • In the first instance, you should contact the airline to see if any alternate arrangement can be made or any compensation may be offered. Please retain any documentation provided by the airline or receipts for any out of pocket costs which you may incur as a result of the delay or cancellation should you need to submit a claim.

  • Am I covered if I had an accident on my trip and needed to upgrade my flight for medical reasons? 
  • We can provide cover for flight upgrades if, due to a claimable event, you are fit to travel and it is deemed medically necessary by our medical assistance team for you to travel in a different class.

  • What Happens If I'm Injured Or Unwell And Miss My Flight?
  • If your journey is cancelled or shortened due to you becoming sick or injured, there is provision to claim for cancellation fees and lost deposits for unused travel and accommodation arrangements that you have paid for in advance and cannot recover in any way from your transport or accommodation provider.  

    If you intend to claim, you’ll need to obtain and supply confirmations, refund advices, and terms and conditions.
