A Pre-existing Medical Condition means:

  • A medical or dental condition that is currently being, or has been investigated, or treated by a health professional (including dentist or chiropractor) at any time, in the past, prior to policy purchase.
  • Any condition for which you take prescribed medicine.
  • Any condition for which you have had surgery.
  • Any condition for which you see a medical specialist or
  • Pregnancy - congratulations by the way!

This definition applies to you, your Travelling Party, a Relative or any other person.

If you fit into one of the above six categories then you would need to follow our online medical approval procedure. Your condition could still be covered for free.

12. How much does it cost to add cover for my Pre-existing Medical Condition to my travel insurance policy?

In order to work this out then you will need to go through the "Online Assessment" process. You will need to do a quote for the travel you are looking to do in order for us to correctly calculate any extra pre-existing medical condition premiums. Follow the instructions as you go to the "buy" part of the process to go through our approvals system.

13. Do I have to pay an additional premium for each Pre-existing Medical Condition I have, or is it just one set price?

It is just one set price. A person with three approved PE conditions will pay the same as someone with only one approved PE condition. You do not need to pay an additional premium for each one of them.

14. I have a Frequent Traveller policy. Do I need to submit a Medical Declaration Form for each new Journey?

No. You pay the additional premium for your Pre-existing Medical Condition[s] for the 12 month period. You only need to submit a new Medical Declaration Form when it comes time to renew your Frequent Traveller policy. You do not need to tell us when you are travelling over the period of the annual policy either.

15. What happens if I purchase a travel insurance policy with you and a PE condition develops? Would I need to pay an additional premium?

If you have already purchased your travel insurance policy then any new medical condition that arises after that date is not considered a PE condition and you would not need to pay any loading. That said, you would need to obtain a letter from your doctor saying that you are fit to travel and that you had not had any symptoms before the date you purchase your travel insurance.

Please note that all exclusions listed in What Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered under any circumstances? are still excluded.

16. What happens if a Relative has a Pre-existing Medical Condition?

If, as a result of a Pre-existing Medical Condition, a Relative of yours is hospitalised in New Zealand or Australia or dies in New Zealand or Australia after the policy is issued, and at the time of policy issue you were unaware of the likelihood of such hospitalisation or death, the following cover is available:

Section 4 - Family Emergency (Plans A, D, E, F, G & H only)

Reimbursement of the Reasonable additional cost of your return to New Zealand. We will only pay the cost of the fare class you had planned to travel at. Wherever claims are made by you under this Section and Section 16 for cancelled services/facilities or alternative arrangements for the same or similar services/facilities, we will pay for the higher of the two amounts, not both.

Section 6 - Resumption of Journey (Plans A, E & H only)

Reimbursement of your airfares for you to return to the place you were when your Journey was interrupted, if you return to your Home. Wherever claims are made by you under this Section and Section 16 for cancelled services/facilities or alternative arrangements for the same or similar services/facilities, we will pay for the higher of the two amounts, not both.

Section 16 - Cancellation Fees & Lost Deposits (Plans A, D, E, F, G & H only)

Your cancellation fees and lost deposits for travel and accommodation arrangements that you have paid in advance and cannot recover in any other way if your Journey is cancelled or shortened at any time through circumstances neither expected nor intended by you or outside your control.

The most we will pay under each of the above Policy Sections is:

  • $2,000 for Single policies
  • $2,000 per person for Group policies
  • $4,000 for Family policies

Please read the Policy Wording carefully for complete details of what "We Will Pay" and "We Will Not Pay" and which of the benefits are provided under each Plan.

Importantly, please note that exclusions do apply, as well as limits to the cover.
