NZ government advice for Zambia
When travelling to Zambia, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Zambia.
There is high risk to your security in the border areas with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Mozambique due to the presence of landmines. The local authorities can provide advice on affected areas. We advise against all tourist and other non essential travel to these areas.
There is some risk to your security elsewhere in Zambia due to violent crime and we advise caution.
Armed robberies and carjackings are common throughout Zambia, particularly in Lusaka and other major cities. Violent robberies, sometimes resulting in fatalities, have occurred along the Cairo, Chachacha, Freedom Way and Lumumba Roads of Lusaka. New Zealanders in Zambia should exercise a high level of personal security awareness at all times, especially in public places (ie bus and railway stations) and areas frequented by foreigners. Walking alone or travelling after dark is not recommended.
New Zealanders in Zambia should avoid any demonstrations, political rallies and large public gatherings as they have the potential to turn violent.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Zambia should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Zambia are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
