When travelling to United States of America, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for United States of America.

There is some risk to your security in the United States due to the threat from terrorism and we advise caution.

There is an increased global risk of terrorism. No country is immune from a terrorist attack, and no person is immune from becoming a victim of an attack.  Terrorists have little regard for civilian casualties and, in many cases, attacks are designed to maximise casualties.

Wherever you are, you should keep yourself informed about the latest alerts and stay aware of your surroundings in areas where large numbers of people congregate, such as shopping malls, markets, monuments, demonstrations and on any public transport.

A terrorist plot to allegedly blow up aircraft in mid-flight using liquid explosives on flights from the United Kingdom to the United States was disrupted in a major counter-terrorism operation carried out in the United Kingdom in August 2006.

Travellers from New Zealand to the United States should allow three hours when transiting from an international flight to a domestic flight due to increased security checks.

The Transportation Security Administration website provides guidance for airline passengers travelling to the United States.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in the United States should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.  Medical costs in the United States are extremely high and the New Zealand government cannot assist with medical expenses.
