NZ government advice for United Kingdom
When travelling to United Kingdom, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for United Kingdom.
There is some risk to your security in the United Kingdom due to the threat from terrorism and we advise caution.
New Zealanders travelling and resident in the United Kingdom are advised to take account of the terror threat level assigned by the British authorities when making travel decisions. The United Kingdom remains a priority target for terrorist activity, with a major attack in 2005 and significant terror plots disrupted in recent years.
For the latest alert level, and more information, see the United Kingdom Home Office website . It is also recommended you monitor the media for information about threats to your safety and security in the United Kingdom.
The terrorist group Al Qaida has made a specific threat to conduct terrorist attacks across Europe and the United Kingdom shares this threat with the rest of the region. Al Qaida and individuals and groups inspired by their ideology have previously conducted attacks in major cities across Europe and continue to plan attacks.
The political situation in Northern Ireland has improved since the 1998 peace agreement. However incidents of religious violence and dissident activity continue to occur on occasions. The annual parades which occur during the period April to August and particularly leading up to 12 July have the potential to turn violent and we recommend you avoid them. There has been a rise in the number of violent attacks by dissident groups since 2008. These have primarily targeted the Northern Ireland security services, but a recent attack in Derry targeted a bank and some rebels have signalled their intention to target the financial sector.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in the United Kingdom should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place.
New Zealanders traveling or resident in the United Kingdom are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
