NZ government advice for Tonga
When travelling to Tonga, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Tonga.
Tonga is generally peaceful with no significant security concerns. Successful elections under a newly designed democratic system were held in late 2010.
Crime levels in Tonga are relatively low, although there has been a rise in house-break-ins and property theft due to the economic downturn. There have also been some incidences of violent assault associated with robbery. Security risks increase after dark and New Zealanders should avoid going out alone or to isolated locations.
In late 2009, 74 people lost their lives when a passenger ferry the MV Princess Ashika sank. Maritime safety, particularly of older vessels, is a concern in Tonga.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tonga should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
