NZ government advice for Tajikistan

Flag of Tajikistan

When travelling to Tajikistan, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Tajikistan.

There is high risk to your security in areas bordering Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan due to the uncertain security situation and the presence of landmines and we advise against all tourist and non-essential travel to these areas. There have been incidents involving armed clashes between Tajik security forces and suspected criminal groups. There are both marked and unmarked minefields close to the borders and New Zealanders are advised not to venture off the main roads.

Elsewhere in Tajikistan there is some risk to your security due to the threat from terrorism and civil unrest and we advise caution.

There is a threat from terrorism in Tajikistan. In July 2009, there were three small explosions in the capital of Dushanbe, one near the international airport, one near Hotel Tojikiston and one near Korvon Market. New Zealanders in Tajikistan are advised to maintain a high degree of personal security awareness and keep themselves informed of any security related announcements by Tajik authorities.

The political situation has been stable since the 1997 peace agreement bringing the civil war to an end. However, we recommend you avoid any protests or demonstrations as they have the potential to turn violent.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tajikistan should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Tajikistan are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
