NZ government advice for Peru

When travelling to Peru, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Peru.

There is some risk to your security in Peru due to the threat from terrorism and violent crime and we advise caution.

There remains a threat of terrorism from the Shining Path group in remote coca growing areas in central Peru. As we advise against travel to and from Colombia across land borders, we also recommend particular caution in the border area with Colombia.

?Express? kidnappings, where individuals are held until they have been forced to withdraw money from a bank, have become more frequent. We advise New Zealanders travelling in Peru to be vigilant about personal security, especially in Lima and other major cities.

Protests and demonstrations are common in Peru, and have the potential to turn violent. We recommend you avoid such situations.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Peru should have comprehensive travel or medical insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders travelling to or residing in Peru are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
