NZ government advice for Madagascar
When travelling to Madagascar, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Madagascar.
There is high risk to your security in Madagascar due to the unpredictable security situation and we advise against all tourist and other non-essential travel.
On 18 March 2009, the military took power in Madagascar after President Ravalomanana stood down. On 21 March 2009, the former Mayor of Antananarivo was installed as head of a transitional government as part of a power-sharing agreement that provides for legislative and presidential elections to be held within the next 15 months.
In recent months, demonstrations and riots fuelled by political tensions in Madagascar have resulted in civil unrest, clashes with security forces and deaths. New Zealanders are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings and monitor the unfolding security situation through the local media. Any instructions and restrictions issued by the local authorities or security forces should be complied with. We also recommend you exercise a high degree of personal security awareness at all times.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Madagascar should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders travelling or resident in Madagascar are strongly encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
