NZ government advice for Liberia

Flag of Liberia

When travelling to Liberia, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Liberia.

There is high risk to security in Liberia due to the unpredictable security situation and incidents of violent crime and we advise against all tourist and other non-essential travel.

Liberia continues to recover from a devastating civil war which ended in August 2003. Although a large UN peacekeeping force is deployed in Liberia the security situation remains unpredictable. The potential for violence and civil unrest is high due to ongoing political and social tensions. New Zealanders in Liberia are advised to avoid all crowds, political rallies and demonstrations as they have the potential to turn violent.

Violent crime occurs throughout Liberia. There is a high incidence of sexual assault, and foreign travellers have been the targets of street crime, robbery and muggings. Travelling alone or after dark is not recommended. New Zealanders are advised not to travel to Liberia unless they have made adequate security arrangements with a reliable organisation in advance of their arrival.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Liberia should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders visiting or living in Liberia are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade .
