NZ government advice for Kyrgyzstan

Flag of Kyrgyzstan

When travelling to Kyrgyzstan, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Kyrgyzstan.

There is high risk to your security in Kyrgyzstan due to civil unrest and we advise against all tourist and other non-essential travel. New Zealanders currently in Kyrgyzstan with concerns for their safety should consider departing if it is safe to do so.

On 6 and 7 April 2010, large-scale anti-government demonstrations took place in the capital Bishkek and other cities across Kyrgyzstan. Violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces resulted in a number of fatalities and numerous injuries on both sides. Following the departure of the President from Bishkek and resignation of the Prime Minister, an Interim Government has been formed but the security situation remains unpredictable. A State of Emergency has been declared throughout the country and a curfew has been imposed in Bishkek from 10pm to 6am, following reports of looting and arson after dark. Curfews may be imposed in other parts of the country and are subject to change at short notice.

New Zealanders currently in Bishkek are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in the city, stay indoors after dark and monitor local media and information sources for updates on the unfolding security situation. New Zealanders throughout the country are advised to avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings and areas of military or security force activity. We recommend you comply with any restrictions and instructions issued by the local authorities and ensure your travel documents are up to date and easily accessible at all times.

New Zealanders with concerns for their safety should consider departing the country if it is safe to do so. The border with Kazakhstan is reported to be open but could be subject to closure at short notice. Tensions exist over recognition of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek borders. You should only use officially recognised border crossings in this area, as there is a risk that uncontrolled border areas may be landmined. New Zealanders planning to depart from Bishkek International Airport should confirm their flights prior to travelling to the airport, as flights may be delayed or cancelled and the airport could be closed at short notice.

There is an underlying threat from terrorism in Kyrgyzstan. New Zealanders in Kyrgyzstan are advised to be security conscious at all times, particularly in public areas.

Violent crime (including robbery and mugging) is increasing and foreigners are often targeted due to their perceived wealth. We recommend you avoid travelling alone and at night, and only use official taxis.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Kyrgyzstan should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Kyrgyzstan are strongly encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
