NZ government advice for Jordan
When travelling to Jordan, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Jordan.
There is some risk to your security in Jordan due to the threat from terrorism and we advise caution.
Political developments in Jordan and the region can trigger demonstrations and protests. Since January 2011, an increasing number of protests have taken place in Jordan, often occurring on a Friday after midday prayers. New Zealanders are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as even those intended to be peaceful have the potential to turn violent. We recommend you monitor local developments closely and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
Due to the threat from terrorism, New Zealanders are advised to be security conscious at all times and heed any warnings issued by the local authorities. In August 2010, a rocket landed close to the Intercontinental Hotel in Aqaba, killing a Jordanian national and injuring four others. In January 2010, there was an explosion on the Amman to Dead Sea road, reportedly targeting an Israeli diplomatic convey, no-one was injured in the explosion. In November 2005, three suicide bombers killed 60 people and injured nearly 100 when they attacked several international hotels in Amman. Further terrorist attacks are possible and could be directed against Westerners.
Despite enhanced security measures taken by the Jordanian authorities there have been serious incidents at tourist sites in the past. These incidents appear to have been random, criminal acts. In July 2008, five foreign nationals were shot and wounded by a lone gunman as they boarded a bus following a concert in the Roman Amphitheatre in Amman. In September 2006, a lone gunman shot at a group of foreign tourists close to the Roman ruins in Amman, killing one person and injuring six others.
New Zealanders travelling or living in Jordan should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.
New Zealanders visiting or living in Jordan are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
