NZ government advice for Greece

Flag of Greece

When travelling to Greece, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Greece.

There is some risk to your security in Greece due to the threat from terrorism and civil unrest and we advise caution.

Terrorism
Greece shares with the rest of Europe a threat from terrorism. There is also a history of domestic terrorism in Greece, often targeting government buildings, police stations, banks and commercial interests. In the past, there have been a number of bomb attacks in urban areas, some of which have resulted in injury or death. Further attacks are possible, including in places frequented by travellers.

New Zealanders in Greece are advised to stay informed of potential threats to safety and security by monitoring the media and other local information sources. We recommend New Zealanders exercise a high degree of security awareness at all times.

Civil unrest
Strikes and demonstrations against economic and political developments in Greece occurred frequently throughout 2011. In light of the ongoing economic crisis, further demonstrations are likely. Although tourists have not been targeted in violence surrounding demonstrations, the potential remains for them to be caught up in violence directed at others. Strikes occur regularly and cause disruption to public transport, including air travel, sea and rail transport, and taxi services.

New Zealanders in Greece are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations and comply with any restrictions and instructions issued by the local authorities. New Zealanders who find themselves in an area affected by demonstrations or violence should leave the area if it is safe to do so, or if this is not possible, find a safe location, remain indoors and heed any local advice.

Crime
Opportunistic petty crime like pickpocketing, bag snatching and passport theft is common in tourist areas and on public transport. Travellers are often targeted on the metro and on the train to and from Athens Airport. New Zealanders are advised to be security conscious in public places and guard their belongings carefully.

General travel advice
New Zealanders travelling or living in Greece should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders in Greece are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
