NZ government advice for Angola

Flag of Angola

When travelling to Angola, you should always get travel insurance in case the worst happens. To help you ensure you travel safely, we have included the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for Angola.

There is high risk to your security in Angola, with the exception of the capital Luanda, due to violent crime, banditry and kidnapping and we advise against all tourist and other non-essential travel.

There is some risk to your security in the capital Luanda due to the high level of violent crime and we advise caution. Areas frequented by foreigners are particular targets and crowded places, such as markets, should be avoided. Muggings, armed robberies and carjackings occur, and walking alone or after dark is not recommended. New Zealanders should exercise a high degree of personal security awareness at all times.

Travel outside Luanda can be difficult and dangerous and should be made only in the company of persons or organisations experienced in local conditions. Landmines and unexploded munitions present a hazard outside major cities and travellers are advised to keep to well-established routes.

In 2008, violent incidents including murder, rape and kidnappings involving foreigners were reported in Cabinda Province. The groups claiming responsibility for these attacks have declared their intention to continue the attacks against foreigners.

The Angolan authorities are sensitive to the presence of foreigners in the diamond producing areas of North and South Lunda provinces. Travellers may be subject to restrictions on movement or detention by security forces in these areas. Armed banditry is also a problem.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Angola should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place that include provision for medical evacuation by air.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Angola are strongly encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
